Food Addiction

What Kind of Food Addiction Do You Have?

The foods that we eat on a regular basis can have a profound effect on our overall health. If we eat too much of the wrong thing, it is very easy for us to gain weight and that weight can be quite difficult to take off.

If, on the other hand, we tend to eat things that are good for us, we can expect our health to be in fairly good shape for the most part. Something that is currently affecting millions of people to one degree or another, however, is food addiction. What exactly is this addiction and how can you overcome it?

Food addiction, quite simply, is an addiction to a certain substance that just happens to be something that we eat. Similar to the way that you can be addicted to anything else, such as prescription or over-the-counter drugs, you can easily become addicted to these foods.

They alter the way that we feel and in some cases, we may be mentally addicted to these items and feel that we need them all the time but in others, we may actually have a physical addiction. How can you tell?

One of the easiest ways to tell what type of food addiction that you have is whether you have any physical withdrawal symptoms if you should happen to abstain from it. A good example of this and something that many people have an addiction to is caffeine.

We tend to get caffeine from a lot of the things that we eat and drink, including chocolate and coffee along with sugary soda. Most people who abstain from caffeine completely by going cold turkey will end up with a number of physical withdrawal symptoms, especially a headache.

Another type of food addiction that is very common is addiction to sugar. Sugar occurs naturally in a variety of different foods that are good for us, including fruits and vegetables. Refined sugar, on the other hand, is stuffed into processed foods in such large quantities that it not only gets us to the point where we have an outrageous food addiction to it, it affects our health quite severely.

By compromising our ability to process all of the sugar naturally using insulin, the leftover sugar is simply stored as fat on our body.

This type of the food addiction to sugar is more common than you probably think. It causes an insulin resistance problem in many individuals, one that can lead to an unhealthy life and even a premature death.

If the circumference of your waist is larger than the circumference of your hips, you have a problem with insulin resistance. The only way for you to overcome it and to get rid of this food addiction is to completely remove sugar from your diet.

Overcoming these various food addictions is going to be a challenge, especially if you have been dealing with them for quite some time. Just because it's challenging, however, does not mean it is impossible.

With the right kind of support system and some determination on your part, you can overcome these addictions and get a grip on your health once again.
