Obesity Facts

In today's society, it is difficult to find somebody that does not have a problem with their weight. Yes, there are some people who are lean and tend to keep their body mass within check but they are more of an exception than the rule. You might be interested to know, however, that the real definition of obesity may differ from what your own personal opinion is.

Here are some obesity facts that you should be aware of, some of which may change your opinion of just how dangerous it is to carry around additional weight.

The first of the facts that we should discuss is exactly what comprises the definition of obesity in the first place. Most people would consider somebody to be obese if they were carrying around additional weight but in reality, the official definition is measured by the amount of body fat that a person is carrying. For example, the threshold for obesity in a male is 25% body fat and in a female, 30% body fat. A person may begin to look a little bit "chunky" whenever they hit a body fat percentage of around 15-20%, but they would not be considered obese.

There are a number of different problems that go along with obesity that you should be aware of. For example, a person who is obese has twice as much of a chance of having high blood pressure than somebody who has their weight under control. As a matter of fact, it is thought to affect up to 26% of all individuals who are overweight. Remember, hypertension does not typically carry any other symptoms along with it, hence it is named the silent killer. It is dangerous to have high blood pressure and the related problems of stroke and heart disease can be fatal.

The same is also true of a number of other different diseases, including adult onset diabetes, colon cancer and even gallbladder problems. Many of these problems can be kept under control and perhaps even reversed by an individual dropping their body fat percentage.

Some of the most important facts, however, include exactly how simple it is for a person to lose weight if they just put their mind to it.

All that is really necessary, in many cases is for an individual to drop the amount of calories that they are taking in every day below the amount that they are burning. They can either do this by reducing the amount that they eat or by getting some exercise that will raise their metabolism and therefore the number of calories they are burning per day.

Just because an individual is now obese does not mean that it is a death sentence or something that they need to live with for the rest of their life. With a little bit of perseverance on their part, they can turn their life around and begin seeing a difference in the way that they look within just a week or two. That is one of the most important obesity facts that anyone could know.
