Weight Loss Surgery

There are plenty of us who struggle with our weight on a regular basis. For some of us, it has been something that has been plaguing us for many years, perhaps for our entire life. Although we may try a number of different diet and exercise routines, it just seems that we don't have any kind of permanent solution.

At some point or another, therefore, we will probably consider the possibility of surgery. If we do, we are not alone. As a matter of fact, over 140,000 individuals had weight surgery in 2004 and those numbers continue to rise on a yearly basis.

We may have different ideas about surgery and to be certain, there are a number of different types of surgery that can be done. Some of them are very invasive and will require us to undergo a number of different changes in our overall lifestyle.

There are other types of surgery, however, that are minimally invasive and they may work just as effectively. The numbers really tell the story, simply because most people who undergo surgery are able to keep off anywhere from 50 to 75% of the additional weight once the surgery has been completed.

By far, the most popular type of surgery is gastric bypass. In gastric bypass surgery, the digestive system in an individual is manipulated so that you are unable to eat and digest as much food. It is done by a surgeon creating a small pouch toward the top of your stomach and then bypassing the remainder of your stomach by connecting it directly to the small intestine. This small pouch which is created is roughly 1 inch in diameter and can only hold about 1 ounce of food at a time.

Gastric bypass surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is typically done using a laparoscope so that there is only a very small incision that is necessary.

After this type of surgery is completed, you will have a 12 week program where you will have very specific things that you will eat. Because you will only be able to have about 1 ounce of food at a time, you must make sure that you eat with nutrition in mind at all times.

Of course, there are other forms of surgery as well, some of which are better suited for different individuals. A good example of this is gastric banding. During this type of weight surgery, a band is placed around the top of the stomach which controls the speed at which food enters into the stomach. This helps to give the individual a feeling of fullness which reduces the amount that they eat.

Of course, you can get around the weight surgery by going on a reasonable diet and exercise plan. If you are unable to lose weight and feel as though your health is in danger as a result of your obesity, weight surgery may be an option that you should consider.
